Co-founders Michael Patterson (President and CEO) and Marc Bilodeau (CTO) worked together as networking technology trainers at Cabletron throughout the 90s. During their time there, they recognized the need for better visualization and analytics of the data that ran across the network. At that time, SNMP was a great tool for monitoring the health of switches and routers, reporting device failures and bandwidth utilization on switch and router ports, but it lacked the context of the traffic itself. The problem was that poor user experience was generally not the result of a hardware failure, but something else. The industry needed a system to deliver traffic-level context and forensic data for faster root cause analysis and better security. The result of Mike and Marc’s efforts was Scrutinizer.
